SLU Rugby History

SLU Rugby is a club full of time-honored traditions and is the most successful club/varsity sport at SLU. Established in 1957, SLU rugby is the oldest club sport on campus. Over the past 15 years, a shift has been made to make SLU Rugby a premier team in D-II competition.

Since 1996, SLU has won the Missouri Union Langenberg Cup Championship six times, two MRFU championships (2005 and 2009), and has participated in five Western Territorial Championships, placing 4th in D-I in 1996, 6th in D-II in 2002, and 3rd in D-II in 2009. During that timeframe the boys can also boast top-4 finishes in the Baton Rouge Mardi Gras Tournament, St. Louis Ruggerfest, Carbondale All Fools, Heart of America, and the 2006 Carbondale Tournament Champions.

Currently, SLU Rugby looks to repeat their success of the 2008-09 seasons, by traveling back to the Western Territorial Championships in the spring of 2010. While it will be a long tough road to travel, the Coaches Justin Whitton and Doug Aten, along with the veteran team captains SLU Rugby’s tradition of success will continue this season.
